Abstract

In order to modify the knowledge of hypertensive patients about their disease and to control it, a pre-experimental study was carried out in hypertensive patients of the José Martí Pérez Polyclinic University of Santiago de Cuba (Cuba), during the months of June 2013 to June 2014. The sample was 60 patients, obtained by simple random sampling. A weekly class program of seven sessions, using participatory techniques, was given. For baseline and final measurement, a structured questionnaire was used, which included sociodemographic variables and additionally the participants' blood pressure was taken. There was a significant increase in knowledge about arterial hypertension, greater control of the disease and also a significant decrease in the attendance to the Corps of Guard for high blood pressure. In conclusion, educational interventions could be an important tool to take into account in the control of arterial hypertension in primary health care.
