Medical students’ satisfaction with the psychology discipline

Abstract

Introduction: The educational teaching-learning process must be aimed at achieving quality training and learning for its application throughout professional life.

Objective: To explore student’s expectations with regard to the psychology discipline in terms of the usefulness given to every topic received, once they have finished the studies of the aforementioned discipline.

Method: Quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional study conducted in three groups of the second semester (50% of the total). A survey developed for the purposes of this study and validated by experts’ criteria was applied. Relative frequency analysis was used to get results.

Results: Stress and personality topics reached 71.5% selection in terms of interest; also, 69.4% considered the teaching received as excellent. Lectures and practices were considered as the most effective in their training.

Conclusions: The students developed expectations in relation to their possibilities to know about their patients, attitudes and mental functioning. They gave usefulness and quality to all topics of the discipline in both training activities and forms of organization in education, making emphasis on its practical usefulness. The impression on student-teacher relationship was very favorable and formative.
