Abstract

Introduction: Acute coronary syndrome associated with risk factors and complications, represents the leading cause of death in Cuba and worldwide.
Objective: To characterize patients with ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome admitted to the coronary care unit of "General Calixto García" University Hospital.
Methods: A retrospective, observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted in patients with ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome admitted to the coronary care unit of "General Calixto García" Hospital in Havana, from September 2021 to September 2022. The universe included 128 patients, and the sample consisted of 108 patients who met the inclusion criteria.
Results: The average age was 64.2 ± 12.7 years, with a predominance of males. Arterial hypertension showed the highest prevalence (73.1 %). Inferior location acute coronary syndrome (50.9 %), successful thrombolysis (46.3 %), patients with complications (51.9 %), electrical complications (58.9 %), and a lethality of 18.5 %, predominated in the study.
Limitations: Retrospective design, moderate sample size, and pandemic context.
Conclusions: The characterization performed evidences a high-risk profile in patients with STEMI treated in a hospital without hemodynamic services, with emphasis on advanced age and hypertension as determinants of worse outcomes. The study provides evidence to optimize management with thrombolysis and monitoring of electrical complications.
