Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has represented a global health problem, with healthcare workers being the most exposed and vulnerable to the virus.
Objective: To provide a clinical and epidemiological characterization of healthcare workers with COVID-19 at the Calixto García Hospital, 2020-2021.
Method: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 252 workers at the Calixto García Clinical and Surgical Hospital, from whom epidemiological and clinical variables were collected. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used, with p < 0.05 considered significant.
Results: The mean age was 41.1 years. Females predominated (62.7 %) and white skin color predominated (62.3 %). The majority were physicians (50.4 %) and nurses (19.4 %). 51.2 % of the workers who became ill suffered from comorbidities such as high blood pressure (11.5 %) and asthma (11.1 %). Only 14.7 % were asymptomatic. 85.3 % presented minor symptoms: fever was the most common at 35.7 %, followed by anosmia (35.3 %) and headache (28.6 %). 9.5 % presented major symptoms (dyspnea). Two deaths were reported, for a case fatality rate of 0.8 %. The mortality rate was 0.07 %.
Conclusions: Healthcare workers at the Calixto García Hospital were at high risk of contracting COVID-19. Female sex, comorbidities, and occupation were the most common factors in the patients, with a predominance of minor symptoms and a low case fatality rate.
